NAPEO Gives Back

In conjunction with NAPEO's 2021 Annual Conference & Marketplace, this year's NAPEO Gives Back partner is San Antonio-based Soldiers' Angels

The mission of Soldiers' Angels is to provide aid, comfort, and resources to the military, veterans, and their families. The organization represents a global network of volunteers who support veterans, but our efforts will support Soldiers’ Angels veteran support program at the Veterans Affairs (VA) facilities in San Antonio.

Each year more than 60,000 veterans seek treatment at the VA hospitals and rehab facilities in San Antonio. Of those, about 85% are low income or homeless vets. Veterans often try to schedule multiple VA appointments in one day to save on transportation costs, as most depend on public transit to get around. With very limited income, eating a meal in the VA Cafeteria (or Canteen) is typically a luxury they simply cannot afford. Soldiers’ Angels provides Canteen Gift Cards to veterans who cannot otherwise afford to eat in the VA cafeteria. This gift of a hot meal makes all the difference in what can otherwise be very difficult days for these heroes.

It’s our goal to raise $75,000, enough money to fund those Canteen Gift Cards for one full year, feeding more than 11,000 vets as they pass through the VA hospital system in San Antonio. It’s an ambitious goal, but we know that NAPEO members are ready to step up. The NAPEO Gives Back initiative was launched in 2019 to harness the “Power of Many” in the PEO industry and facilitate community involvement and charitable endeavors. One of the key parts of the initiative is give back to the cities that host NAPEO’s Annual Conference & Marketplace and other meetings by making an impactful contribution to a worthy local charity that will make a real difference for the host city.

“We started NAPEO Gives Back to leave the communities that host our conferences and meetings a little better off than they were before we arrived. -- Barron Guss, NAPEO’s former chair and the driving force behind the NAPEO Gives Back initiative.

In 2019, the first year of NAPEO Gives Back, the association raised more than $52,000 for Anthropos Arts, an Austin-based charity that provides mentoring and musical instruction for low-income students. Last year, we partnered with Marco Island, Florida-based Our Daily Bread Food Pantry which serves more than 30,000 individuals by distributing food.  Together we raised $79,470 for Our Daily Bread. This donation allowed the food pantry to purchase a long desired walk-in freezer. Coastal Breeze News covered the check presentation, you can read the story here
